Turbine: A Bookshelf Like a Running Turbine Drives the Rich Life of an Apartment

An Innovative Design by Qisi Design Chen Sissi - Fu Chong

Inspired by the running turbine, the designer created a unique bookshelf that wraps around the structural wall, transforming the apartment into a dynamic living space. With various functional areas arranged around the bookshelf, residents can navigate through different scenes, akin to the movement of a turbine, driving a vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle.

In this residential interior design, Qisi Design experimented with a new concept for family public spaces. The centerpiece of the design is a cylindrical bookshelf that serves as the focal point, with other functional spaces strategically arranged around it. This innovative approach not only solves the challenge posed by the T-shaped structure wall in the middle of the space but also breaks away from conventional living room layouts, injecting vitality into the family public space. Qisi Design has successfully explored a new possibility for family living spaces.

The cylindrical wooden device that wraps around the T-shaped structure wall is meticulously crafted by on-site carpenters. The large-size wooden and metal frame glass doors are mounted on a heavy pulley track fixed on the beam, allowing for flexible movement. The wires are cleverly concealed along the side of the pulley track. Customized metal rods and professional hooks enable residents to easily change and adjust the position of paintings, adding a touch of personalization to the space.

The apartment has an interior area of 120 square meters, providing ample space for the innovative design to unfold. The family public space is a large area composed of three original rooms, seamlessly integrating the balcony, platform, study, viewing area, sports area, family gallery, and bar around the bookshelf. These areas are interconnected, creating a cohesive spatial experience. Sliding doors separate the study and viewing area, while the platform area serves as a versatile space for children to play or as a temporary guest room. At the back of the sofa, a family gallery is created using track-type spotlights and metal rods, allowing residents to showcase their cherished artworks.

The design project commenced in February 2020 and was completed in March 2020 in Shanghai. Construction began in May 2020 and concluded in November 2020. Throughout the design process, Qisi Design conducted qualitative research to understand the needs of urban youth families for family public spaces. Questionnaires were distributed to the apartment's residents, and similar cases were studied to gather insights. The research revealed that freedom, flexibility, possibility, home office, home sports, and a sense of art were key elements desired by young families.

The design team faced several challenges during the project. The first was how to address the structural walls that affected the spatial integrity. By utilizing the bookshelf device to wrap around these walls, they were able to create an interesting spatial experience that maintained the coherence of the space. The second challenge was to position the sofa and TV in a way that did not compromise the openness of the space. Lastly, the construction and installation of the heavy movable door required careful planning and execution.

Qisi Design's Turbine apartment design is a testament to their innovative approach to family living spaces. By reimagining the traditional living room layout and incorporating the bookshelf device as the central element, they have provided a fresh perspective on family public spaces. The design has been recognized for its creativity and resourcefulness, earning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exemplify technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
